Article 5 of the Family Court Act gives jurisdiction to the Family Court to determine paternity for purposes of support only. In a paternity proceeding a legal fiction is established so that someone other than the public will be responsible for paying to support a child born out of wedlock. The Family Court has no jurisdiction to determine status, with the exception that the Family Court has jurisdiction over adoption proceedings...
