In April, 1972, Keith Robert Battig, a moderately mentally retarded child, was enrolled at St. Mary's School for Retarded Children at Clarks, Louisiana. St. Mary's was and is owned and operated by the Catholic Diocese of Alexandria. St. Mary's admitted Keith as a result of an application for admission accepted by letter from the school.
