Between 1971 and 1975, massive amounts of cocaine and marijuana were smuggled from Colombia, South America into the United States, much of it intended for distribution in New York City. In smaller quantities, these drugs entered the country in such things as false-bottom shoes, suitcases, dog cages, hollowed-out-coat hangers and double-lined undergarments.
