On the afternoon of December 26, 1972, New Orleans police stopped defendant-appellant Calvin Richardson for driving his 1968 Pontiac GTO in the wrong direction on a one-way street in downtown New Orleans. Richardson carried two old acquaintances as passengers: Clarence Louis Fritz, riding in the back seat, and Ralph Joseph Anderson in the front passenger seat.
