Plaintiff Gregory sued for damages for violation of his civil rights under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. His complaint, supported by testimony in a trial to a jury in the District Court for the District of Arizona, was that he was subjected to an assault and battery by defendant Thompson, a justice of the peace, in the latter's courtroom.
