The appellant Willabelle Johnson fell while on a moving escalator in respondent's downtown Seattle store. A following descending step squeezed down upon her head and nearly tore off her scalp.

After the escalator was stopped, she was left unaided and unassisted for about 15 minutes. She was then taken to the store infirmary where she asked the store nurse to call an ambulance or a doctor. After a delay...
