The appellant and his wife are citizens and residents of Rhode Island who filed joint federal income tax returns for the calendar years 1960 to 1963 inclusive with the District Director of Internal Revenue in that state. They were indicted jointly in four counts in the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island for wilfully and knowingly attempting to evade and defeat a large part of their income taxes for those years...
