The plaintiff, Alfred Henson Dorsey (Dorsey), a nightcleaner employed by the Emerson Hotel (the Emerson), brought an action of tort against the General Elevator Company, Inc. (General Elevator) in the Court of Common Pleas of Baltimore City for damages sustained when Dorsey fell down one of the Emerson's elevator shafts.
