On January 6, 1959, the plaintiff was driving his automobile in a westerly direction on "Lateral 8 1/2", a paved county highway near Marana, Arizona. He was unaware that he was approaching an intersection of Lateral 8 1/2 with Sanders Road, a graded dirt road crossing the highway at approximately right angles.
