The respondents' minor daughter, Joan, aged six, was drowned on July 2, 1951, in the waters of Puget Sound near the respondents' home in Des Moines. She was with a party of adults and children who were swimming in the sound at the time of the accident and was in the custody of a neighbor, Mrs. Cooley.
