Robert Lee Fields was charged, in an indictment in two counts, with assaulting Walter J. Branch and Christine Shanks with intent to murder them by shooting them with a pistol, a weapon likely to produce death. The jury returned a verdict of guilty on both counts and recommended that he be sentenced to serve not more than ten years and not less than ten years on each count.
