Appeal by defendant from an adverse judgment in an action to recover treble damages, attorney's fees and costs under the United States Housing and Rent Act of 1947.1 At the time involved, June 14, 1948, the Housing and Rent Act of 1947, in pertinent part, provided: "Any person who demands, accepts, or receives any payment of rent in excess of the maximum rent prescribed ... shall be liable to the person from whom he demands...
