Early in the morning of April 8, 1927, fire broke out in the schooner Commonwealth. About an hour later 15 of the crew left the schooner in dories. The captain and 4 of the crew remained on the vessel and succeeded in subduing the fire, but not until such damage had been done to the schooner that all hope of saving her was abandoned.
