This tort action arises from events which occurred on February 22, 1985, when the plaintiff was fifteen years old and was detained on suspicion of shoplifting at the defendants' store.

On, or about, September 3, 1986, the plaintiff, through her mother, filed a complaint against the defendants' department store, alleging damages for assault and for false arrest and imprisonment.
