After a jury trial defendant Melvin Evans (defendant) was convicted of one count of aggravated battery. (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1977, ch. 38, par. 12-4(b)(1).) He was sentenced to serve an indeterminate sentence of two to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
